This week my friend Julia put a name to something I’ve often thought about, but didn’t have a name for: Shine Theory<\/a>, coined by Ann Friedman.<\/p>\n “Shine Theory is pretty straightforward. \u2018When you meet a woman who is intimidatingly witty, stylish, beautiful, and professionally accomplished, befriend her,\u2019 explains Friedman. \u2018Surrounding yourself with the best people doesn\u2019t make you look worse by comparison. \nWe sometimes trick ourselves into thinking that buying expensive accessories is the first step toward achieving a goal. I know my Amazon history would reveal plenty of false first steps. I\u2019ve purchased a yoga mat at least 4 separate times. But if you want to start exercising, don\u2019t start by buying a Fitbit, go for a walk. If you\u2019re interested in photography, hold off on buying that dslr, explore the hobby with the camera you have and then evaluate your needs in the future.
